IMMIGRATE TO AMERICA
The period from 1910 to 1940 saw tens of thousands of Asians arriving to the west coast of America.
Their first stop was the Angel Island Immigration Station, a detention center notorious for grueling interrogations.
Chinese women were particularly harassed. If any of their answers were not deemed satisfactory, they would immediately be sent back on the next boat to China.
Quok Shee was detained for two years before she regained her freedom. She was the longest involuntary resident of Angel Island.
